Methanol oxidation on Fe2O3 catalysts and the effects of surface Mo.

The adsorption of methanol on haematite has been investigated using temperature programmed methods, combined with in situ DRIFTS. Model catalysts based on this material have then been made with a shell-core configuration of molybdenum oxide monolayers on top of the haematite core. These are used as models of industrial iron molybdate catalysts, used to selectively oxidise methanol to formaldehy...

Atmospheric methanol measurement using selective catalytic methanol to formaldehyde conversion

A novel atmospheric methanol measurement technique, employing selective gas-phase catalytic conversion of methanol to formaldehyde followed by detection of the formaldehyde product, has been developed and tested. The effects of temperature, gas flow rate, gas composition, reactor-bed length, and reactor-bed composition on the methanol conversion efficiency of a molybdenum-rich, ironmolybdate ca...

One-step electric-field driven methane and formaldehyde synthesis from liquid methanol.

The reaction pathways connecting methanol to methane and formaldehyde are among the most emblematic in chemistry because of their outstanding interest in the fields of energy, synthesis, and bio- and geo-chemistry. Despite of its fundamental nature, the one-pot synthesis of formaldehyde and methane stemming from methanol has never been reported before. Here we present a study, based on ab initi...

Oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde on supported vanadium oxide catalysts compared to gas phase molecules.

The oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde on silica supported vanadium oxide is studied by density functional theory. For isolated vanadium oxide species silsesquioxane-type models are adopted. The first step is dissociative adsorption of methanol yielding CH3O(O=)V(O-)2 surface complexes. This makes the O=V(OCH3)3 molecule a suited model system. The rate-limiting oxidation step involves hydrog...

The O, OH and OOH-assisted selective coupling of methanol on Au-Ag(111).

Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we performed a thorough theoretical investigation on the catalytic mechanism of oxidative self-coupling of methanol with molecular oxygen on Au-Ag catalysts. It is found that molecular oxygen can be activated via a hydroperoxyl (OOH) intermediate by taking a hydrogen atom from co-adsorbed methanol with an energy barrier of 0.51 eV, which is ac...
